New Merch Monday

When I first saw these reading glasses in our new arrivals, I instantly got that warm fuzzy feeling. These glasses remind me of something my kindergarten teacher would wear. Granted, my kindergarten teacher had a bigger-than-life personality and loved everything that was brightly colored or in the slightest bit creative. So this pair of reading glasses sent me down memory lane. I think everyone has had someone in their life full of vibrancy and color – maybe that’s you! If so, or you would like to get a pair for that person, the Kathleen readers are the perfect reading glasses.

The Kathleen comes in four different patterns called Under the Sea, Ocean View, Rose Fiesta, Pineapple Paradise, and Circus Medley. All of these scenes are also hand painted, which only adds to the creativity of the reading glasses.

Back to School: To the dismay of schoolchildren everywhere, it’s getting to be that time of year! In addition to buying pencils and notebooks for your budding scholars, make sure you add a yearly eye exam to the schedule. Vision is extremely important in the developmental years, and, as this article reports, problems with seeing clearly can lead to anything from a lack of interest in reading to headaches to ADHD symptoms.

Myths About Your Child’s Vision: On a similar note, in an article from Carolina Weekly, Dr. Laura Young explains some of the mistakes parents make in terms of their child’s vision. It’s a must-read for parents and grandparents!

Are Designer Sunglasses Worth It? Have you ever wondered whether that $500 pair of sunglasses is really better than the $15 ones? Wonder no more – this article reports that in many cases the sunglasses are made by the same company and provide the same protection for your eyes.

Like Fish? Here’s some good news – not only is fish healthy for your body, but it’s healthy for your eyes. New research shows that a diet of fish can prevent certain age-related eye diseases.

New Merch Monday

Some reading glasses can be boring, and some people like them that way. That’s fine, but what if you want something with a little color? A little style? Maybe something that looks a little more futuristic? Then our new arrival, the Mia, would be the perfect fit! This pair of glasses reminds me of the glasses that Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge wore from Star Trek: The Next Generation. You know the guy that wore the visors?

Okay, they’re not quite as spacey and futuristic, but the Mia does have temples that suggest a square, linear look. These glasses have a darker outlining and the surrounding part of the glasses can come in several brighter colors., including black and blue, black and green, black and white, brown and orange, red and pink, and purple. The glasses are also available in +1.00 through +2.75. So if you want to look slightly high-tech and futuristic without going for the cyclops look, the Mia would be the ideal pick.

Eye News Weekly Roundup

Here’s the latest in eye news and vision resources.

Can’t See 3D TV or Movies? The technology used to make 2D objects appear 3D doesn’t work for Rafe Needleman, and he’s not alone; some experts report that up to 10 percent of the population cannot process the stereoscopic imagery used in films like Toy Story 3 or Avatar 3D. This means some people are left out or have to suffer through images that give them headaches while others enjoy 3D images. Luckily, as this article reports, this is often a treatable condition.

Eyeglasses That Track Your Shopping Preferences: The newest development in marketing and brand research comes from Tobii Technology, a company that has developed eyeglasses shoppers can wear to track their eye movements. As the viewers pause and look at different objects, the glasses will send important data about their shopping preferences to a smart phone. Will this change the way companies market their products, or will consumers find this too invasive? What’s your take?

Driving While Blind? If this works, it will truly be a miraculous invention that changes the lives of millions of blind people. Researchers are developing a car that would use vibrations and air pockets to allow a blind person to drive independently. Sound impossible? Time will tell! The prototype should be ready next year.

Eye Injuries: The eye is one of the most vulnerable parts of the body, and few injuries can be scarier. Here, WebMD gives us an overview of different types of eye injuries, as well as advice for how to avoid or treat them.

New Merch Monday: The Munich

When I was looking over the new arrivals to see which pair I wanted to review for today’s post, the first thing I noticed about the Munich readers is the unique shape of the lenses. Check it out:

sophisticated reading glassesWith the nearly-square shape of the top of the lens and the rounded bottom, the lenses give the impression of tilting upwards. They just faintly suggest cat-eyed glasses; but, overall, the look is a rounded square. It’s definitely not a shape you see every day, so I found myself intrigued. What kind of face shape would work best with this frame shape? After some research (and the help of our sister site’s sunglasses guide), I came to the conclusion that these glasses could work with just about any size and shape of face. They have all the best parts of cat-eyed, square, and round lenses.

The question, then, is whether or not the style of the Munich is for you. I must admit, I fell in love with the Munich’s combination of dark and Rhinestone Reading Glassesclear plastic, a design that’s going to allow the light to reflect your eyes instead of leaving them overtaken by the black frames. The rhinestones and tiny gold studs on the temples add some sparkle, dressing these glasses up so they’re ready for a night out on the town.

The Munich readers in red add even more style:

red reading glassesCan’t you picture these frames on a classy, well-dressed German art dealer? I’m seein’ it – they have just the right touch of class and arty design. And for the sale price of $13.56, the Munich readers are art for a steal.

Eye News Weekly Roundup

Cosmetic Contact Lenses: You might know a teenage girl who is going gaga for pop singer Lady Gaga, as is a good portion of the world population. Just make sure she doesn’t take it too far: recent reports suggest that girls who are trying to emulate the singer’s wide-eyed look in her famous “Bad Romance” video might end up damaging their eyes. Any contacts that are not dispensed by a licensed eye health specialist are technically illegal, but Gaga’s “circle lenses” are even more dangerous because they cover more than just your pupil.

Carrots + Vision: Everybody knows eating carrots improves your vision, right? Wrong. Though a recent survey showed that 30% of eye care providers are asked about carrots at least once a week, the truth is that they cannot improve your vision. They do protect it, however, as do the other foods included in this article.

Eye TelescopeAn Implantable Eye Telescope: There’s hope for those who suffer from age-related macular degeneration. The newly-approved “eye telescope” will magnify images to three times their size and then send the image to the healthy part of the retina. While it has a hefty price ($15,000), studies show 75% of patients experienced improved vision.

Are Yearly Eye Exams Really Necessary? It’s easy to skip out on that yearly eye exam when you don’t notice any problems with your vision. You don’t need glasses, so why bother seeing a doctor? However, the truth is that many serious health problems (including diabetes and brain tumors)  can show up in your eyes before they show any symptoms or signs elsewhere. Get more info here.
