Well, here we are already, at the end of the first month of 2010! Anybody else feel like New Year’s was just yesterday? Before we know it, we’ll be spring cleaning and trading our warm hats and gloves for sunglasses and sandals…
(If you can’t tell, I’m trying to stay optimistic as I huddle here in my heavy sweater and scarf).
It’s Friday again, and that means it’s time for another look at what’s new in the world of vision. Let’s start out with some basic eye info for those of you in need of a little education:
The Parts of the Eye: Some medical articles can be extremely confusing and overly difficult to digest. This site does a great job of putting the anatomy of the eye in terms you don’t have to have a medical degree to understand. Up for a more scientific exploration of the eye? Check out this description of how vision works – it has a nifty animation of what happens when light hits the eye.
It’s easy to feel tired and worn out this time of year. Here’s another reason to take good care of your eyes – psychologists say that eyes are where people look first (and longest) to determine your age and fatigue level. Want to look younger and more awake? The eyes are the key. Someone should tell Joan Rivers she doesn’t have to spend so much time and money on the rest of her face!
Here’s something cool. You’ve probably heard about the power of music to change your mood, reduce stress, or even help with pain. But did you know music has the power to restore eyesight in stroke victims? A study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that patients who had lost half of their spatial awareness due to stroke had their vision improve while listening to music they liked. Amazing!
And here’s your strange and slightly creepy news for the week: Just before the holidays, this man went to his ophthalmologist with what he thought was a case of red eye. The real problem? His pet tarantula. Apparently the Chilean Rose tarantula has a defense mechanism where it releases a mist of hairs at its enemies. The hairs, complete with tiny barbs on the end, had gotten into the man’s eye and worked their vicious way back to his retina. Just another reason not to own any kind of spider. Ever.
Ugh. It still makes me cringe. That’s all for today, folks. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! By the way – if there are any issues or questions connected to eye care that you would like to see explored on this blog, please feel free to leave us a comment! We’re always looking for input from our readers.
Happy Almost-February!

I’m a sucker for gadgets and novelty items: folding hairbrushes you can stick in your purse, pens that allow you to write upside down, and that new brownie pan that cooks 18 perfectly sized, individually baked brownies. Yummmm.
Today’s New Merch Monday glasses are just the type of thing that would appeal to me: reading glasses that fold up to the size of a credit card. I didn’t believe it either, but yes, here they are, complete with their convenient plastic carrying case:
Crazy, huh? What’s nice about these, though, is that unlike the Perfect Brownie Pan (as much as I hate to admit it), this novelty item is actually incredibly useful in lots of situations. The back of the package features an adorably cute picture of the couple that invented the Wallet Readers, Terry and Bob, who emphasize that these “emergency reading glasses” can easily be carried in your wallet or purse, even though they unfold to the size of normal reading glasses. Talk about a life-saver! No longer will you be trapped, unable to read a restaurant menu or to make out the directions on a map. No longer will you dial the wrong number or hit the wrong buttons on your cell phone because you can’t see, and you left your reading glasses at home. Plus, the folding and unfolding of these glasses is easy to figure out, and the frame and materials ensure that the glasses will be durable; they won’t break the second you toss them in your purse.
Okay…so they’re amazingly convenient, but how do they look? The Wallet Readers come in black or tortoise shell, both great colors to wear with any outfit (check out last week’s post for my ode to tortoise shell). The earpieces are metal encased in black plastic with some small detailing to add interest – a swoop to the end of the earpiece, circular cut-outs along the side. While meant for emergency use and therefore not as stylish as our other glasses, the Wallet Readers are definitely nothing to be embarrassed about…and who knows? They might just get you out of a jam! Check them out for yourself!

It’s Friday! Yay! Before we all get swept away with thoughts of the weekend ahead, it’s time to survey the latest in eye-health news. Tune in every Friday for our take on important (and interesting! and just plain strange!) information you need to know, as well as excellent resources to help you take great care of your eyes.
Due for an Eye Exam? It’s recommended that you get your eyes checked once a year to catch any problems or changes in vision before they become serious. Check out WebMd’s guide on How to Choose an Eye Doctor – in addition to telling you what to look for in a qualified medical professional, they also explain the difference between ophthalmologists, optometrists, and opticians.
Your Mom was Right when she told you to stop watching television and go play outside. A study by the National Eye Institute has found an amazing 66% increase in nearsightedness over the last 30 years. The culprit? Too much tv, reading, and video games, and not enough playing outside. Seriously!
Can You Avoid Bifocals? Bifocals can be a big adjustment, one that many people try to put off making. Dr. Jennifer Shu and Dr. Ravi D. Goel explain why some people need bifocals and what your options are in order to see better.
Baseball, the Brain, and Your Eyes: This is really cool. Researchers analyze Willie Mays’ historic catch from the 1954 World Series, attempting to figure out exactly how outfielders are able to get to the right place in time to catch a foul ball. It’s amazing how the eyes, brain, and muscles work together!
And here’s your strange and incredible: this woman was able to see her grandchildren for the first time when doctors used her tooth to cure her blindness! What??
Have a great weekend!

Happy Monday, Everybody! I know, I know…what’s happy about Monday? At least if you’re in Indiana like us you’re experiencing slightly warmer weather this week! When it’s gray and cold like this, I have to be especially careful with my budget, because I tend to want to cheer myself up by buying something pretty and colorful. Luckily, working for Affordable Style means I can usually indulge myself without having to eat ramen noodles all week. And that brings me to today’s subject: Reading Glasses Shopper’s Oxford glasses, a pair of glasses that nicely fulfills the cute + inexpensive requirement.
I have always loved tortoise shell glasses, but what’s particularly great about these is that they’re not the typical brown tortoise shell. The Oxford comes in both a sleek grey tortoise and a pretty purple tortoise, colors that are just a little more interesting than brown but that still can look great with a wide variety of outfits. I especially love the purple shade…over the last couple years, purple has become more and more popular (did you see last night’s Golden Globes?), and this purple is dark enough to almost work as a neutral.
Another reason to love tortoise: sometimes darker glasses can overwhelm your features – not these. The tortoise shell pattern on the Oxford glasses breaks up the solid, darker color with lighter tones, creating a softer look around your eyes (check out a similar effect on actress Rosario Dawson).

The lightweight frame of the Oxford should also make the glasses comfortable (after awhile, I forgot they were on my face!), and the lens height means these glasses can be worn both as full-frame or half-frame readers. At the sale price of $12.71, they’re the perfect way to fend off the winter blues. Enjoy, and stay warm!

Have you experienced confusion in trying to decipher the meanings of terms related to your reading glasses? For instance, can you differentiate the definition of a bridge versus a frame, bifocal versus multifocal or polycarbonate versus power? If you answered no, you are not alone. Reading glasses terminology can become confusing for the average wearer. However, as reading glasses are commonly a daily necessity, it is paramount to gain an understanding of terms related to reading glasses’ anatomy and functionality.
A basic yet significant consideration for the reading glasses buyer and/or wearer is lens type. Those in the market for reading glasses should be aware of the distinctions between a bifocal, trifocal and multifocal lens. A bifocal lens offers two different optical powers. Typically, one power is intended for viewing distant objects, while the other aids in viewing close objects. Alternatively, a trifocal lens features three levels of magnification to correct distance, intermediate and near vision. Incorporating both classifications, a multifocal lens offers segments which provide two or more powers.
Also important in the buying process is an understanding of reading glasses’ working parts. Bridge, frame, temples and lenses constitute standard reading glasses. The bridge is a rounded piece found in the center of the frame that sits on the glasses wearer’s nose. The frame consists of the circular or rectangular pieces at eyeglasses’ front into which lens are fitted. These are typically made of plastic or metal. Temples are identical long and narrow arms that attach to the ends of the frame with hinges and extend over the ears to keep eyeglasses in place. A lens is a glass, plastic or poly carbonate piece through which a wearer views. Reading glasses lenses range from 1.0 to 4.0 in magnification, or strength.

Welcome to Reading Glasses Shopper’s first New Merch Monday! Every week we’ll be fillin’ you in on the latest and greatest here at RGS – make sure you drop us a comment and let us know what you think!
Today’s topic: the new Quinton II Bifocal readers.

Now, there are few accessories that have the power to change your appearance as quickly and as drastically as glasses, whether you’re going for chic, nerdy, or quirky. Me, I like to mix it up depending on my mood for the day (and my outfit), but sometimes you need a pair that stays out of the spotlight and lets you have center stage.
If you’re looking for eyewear that adds class without taking over your face, the Quinton II readers are the way to go. The secret lies in the rimless frame. I’m sure that you’re no stranger to the power of rimless glasses – we see them everywhere, whether it’s Sarah Palin’s famous use of both the round and the square varieties, or Stephen Colbert’s pairing of the style with his cocky, debonair charm. These public figures know – going rimless creates an intelligent and sophisticated look without being bold or obvious, ensuring that when people look at you, they see your face, not your glasses.
I pulled the gold version of the Quinton II to get a closer look (they also come in dark bronze). The first thing I noticed was the deep brown tortoise shell earpieces, which contrast beautifully with the gold of the frame. I like the gentle “swoop” to the bridge
across the nose, and the spring hinges that mean your glasses won’t be bent or broken when a child tries to pull them off your face. One of the greatest benefits to these glasses is that as bifocals they have large enough lenses that you can wear them for both distance and close vision – you won’t find yourself pushing them down your nose to peer over the top. No “Granny-vision” here!
And at their current sale price of $12.71, these glasses are a steal. Sophistication for under $15! What more can you ask?
What do you guys think?
